Commentary

A spring day listening to the call of the birds on the tidal flats, a call that seems to echo, wandering, around the sky. Within that sound the sight of a white bird.

Background

“The Voice of the Sea” was Bokusui’s first collection of poems. In the introduction he wrote of how he loved the call of the birds, the voice of the sea. Within that voice he could feel both sorrow and consolation.
